Diva behind the wheel
Finally, I am able to transfer these pointers from my phone notebook. They were shared to me by no other than my motoring editor Eric Soriano of Manual Magazine. By the way, the test ride series conducted by the Car Awards Group Inc. (CAGI) was a sensation. The slalom tracks temporarily set up in Clark, Pampanga plus the open roads for sprinting my favorite vehicles fed my fantasies of a tuner lifestyle like that of Fast and the Furious.
You see, style cannot be complete without wheels. Just imagine a DIVA commuting her way to the Paris fashion week. Of course, the final look of the vehicle, both exterior and interior, is all that matters but performance counts. I'd laugh at that feelingera of a former officemate of mine bragging about her brand new bug that runs 40 km per hour and takes forever to accelerate! Hah! So what if its the only mustard yellow?
In my previous entry, I featured my favorite from the test drive series which was the Red Kia Sportage. So preppy, so stylish. It passed all four aspects of car testing shared by my motoring editor as follows:
Steering Response
Does the vehicle respond to a turn of the steering wheel with ease and control or does is it take a millennium to turn? Imagine the Titanic not shifting direction fast enough to avoid Spielberg, err, iceberg.
Torque
There is nothing more exciting in a brand new vehicle than its acceleration. An old vehicle takes forever to reach top speed, if they still do, but a new one can easily reach 120kph in a few seconds. The force resulting from inertia should give you that thrill. Otherwise, say hello to my feelingera former officemate! hehe.
Transmission Response
Basically, do you feel a smooth transition in between gear shifts?
Engine Response
You know a good engine when you listen to it at maximum RPM (rounds per minute). You can do this by accelerating at the lowest gear possible until the RPM gauge reaches near red or its limit. A good engine should not have bursts of "poot! poot!" as if the vehicle is one huge fart machine.
