Sector 9 spearheads smokelss alternative

(Published in Yehey! Lifestyle)

There is social relevance to skateboarding after all. Not only do they provide adrenalin but may soon reduce the number of pollutant vehicles as well. So let the children come to me in skateboards and forbid them not eh?

Last Saturday, a large gathering of skaters held a race from Raja Sulayman Park in Manila to the Plaza Parking of Power Plant Mall in Rockwell, Makati. The race was spearheaded by Sector 9 and dubbed “Push Don’t Pollute”, relating the pushing action of the feet needed to thrust the skateboards in place of engines that have been contributing to the green house effect. The number of participants is estimated at more or less 100, their ages ranging from 15 to 42 years old. At the Plaza Parking, a temporary skating ramp was assembled to provide play for those who couldn’t get enough of the race.

“Mixing Extreme sports with green movement is actually a logical mix”, asserts Freddy Gonzalez, President of Aloha Boardsports Philippines. He says that although people think that extreme sports like skateboarding are at odds with the environmentalist philosophy, events such as Sector 9’s Push Don’t Pollute prove otherwise. “The skateboarding lifestyle has a lot of stigma attached to it, most of which is based on unfair assumptions. But the bottom line is, regardless of our lifestyle, we all have to do our part of the environment.”

For Freddy, Sector 9’s “Push Don’t Pollute” race is a way to encourage non-traditional transportation such as skateboarding as an alternative to gas-emitting vehicles. He cites the fact that gasoline is mostly carbon by weight; meaning a gallon of gas may release some 5-6 pounds of carbon into the atmosphere. “And we all know how harmful to our health that is”, quips Freddy.

As evidenced by their Push Don’t Pollute initiative, Sector 9 is far from being an average skateboard retailer. They actually seek to bring a new dimension to the boardsports channel via deep respect for the environment. Sector 9 Marketing Team Member EG Frantantaro shares that the company was influenced by the ideals of Yvon Chounjard, a noted environmentalist and owner of clothing and gear company, Patagonia. “When we got to hear Patagonia owner Yvon Chouinard speak, I think it finally sunk in. Right after when we got home we said that ok we need to make a change right now.”

Chouinard's philosophy of mixing environmentalism and sound business practices made a deep impression on Sector 9. A few years ago, the brand introduced longboards made of bamboo. "We decided to make some kind of a longboard or cruiserboard that's made out of something different and is super renewable and lasts a long time," noted the Sector 9 Marketing Team Member. He shares that another advantage of the bamboo is that it releases 35% more oxygen than equivalent stands of trees and that it's considered as the fastest growing plant in the environment. "Some plants even grow up to four feet daily!" enthuses Fratantaro. Aside from producing bamboo longboards, the brand also switched their cotton line to an organic line of apparel.Aloha Boardsports Inc. is the exclusive distributor of leading action sports apparel and accessories.
